How Does Lighting Affect Paint Color?

See how daylight, warm bulbs and cool LEDs change the appearance of wall colors and how to test a shade correctly.

How Does Lighting Affect Paint Color?

The same paint color can look different under different lighting. Daylight, warm bulbs and cool LEDs can emphasize different undertones.

Cooler rooms may strengthen blue and gray notes, while warm sunlight can make beige and earthy shades richer.

Check the sample in morning, afternoon and evening light as well as under the room’s normal artificial lighting.

Assess the lighting separately

Test in daylight and under artificial light separately. A lamp's ability to render colors matters as well as its color temperature. Two lamps with the same temperature rating may not produce identical results. Install the lighting you intend to use before judging the paint samples.

A simple test plan

Place a sample on a wall facing the window and on one receiving less light. Note differences in shade, direct sun and evening light. Selecting the paint first and later changing to very different lamps creates unnecessary uncertainty. Adjusting a screen's brightness cannot substitute for viewing a physical sample in the actual room.

Before deciding

  • Assess the shade in the actual room under its intended lighting.
  • Compare flooring, furniture and textiles beside the sample.
  • Record product, color code and sheen together.

Is a midday check enough?

Not if the room is mostly used in the evening. Its usual lighting may matter more. View the same sample under the evening lamps before making a final decision from daylight alone.
