How to Match Wall Color with Furniture and Flooring

Learn how undertones, contrast and balance can help you coordinate wall colors with furniture and flooring.

How to Match Wall Color with Furniture and Flooring

Start with the room’s largest fixed elements: flooring, large furniture, doors and cabinetry.

Consider whether the wood and other finishes have warm or cool undertones. Walls and furniture do not need to match exactly; controlled contrast often works better.

If both furniture and flooring are dark, lighter walls can create balance.

Start with the fixed materials

Place a flooring sample, furniture fabric or curtain fabric beside the paint sample. Wood can have yellow, red or gray undertones; a wall shade may emphasize or quiet them. Assess differences in lightness as well as trying to match the same color family exactly.

A practical choice

For warm oak flooring, test both a warm neutral and a slightly cooler neutral wall shade. The better choice depends on the actual room light. Choosing every large surface at the same darkness can flatten the room. Do not decide solely from furniture-store photographs: a physical material sample provides a more useful comparison.

Before deciding

  • Assess the shade in the actual room under its intended lighting.
  • Compare flooring, furniture and textiles beside the sample.
  • Record product, color code and sheen together.

What if the furniture has not arrived?

Obtain a fabric or material sample if possible. Do not rely on a screen photograph for an exact match. Before ordering paint, compare it at least with the fixed flooring and doors.
