How to Prepare Walls After Removing Wallpaper

Learn how to remove adhesive residue, repair damage and prepare walls properly before painting.

How to Prepare Walls After Removing Wallpaper

After wallpaper removal, adhesive, paper residue and small defects may remain. Remove all residue before painting.

Repair cracks, holes and uneven areas, then sand and remove dust after drying.

Depending on the wall condition, primer can help provide a more even and reliable base.

Remove the adhesive

Adhesive left after stripping wallpaper can interfere with the coating. Choose a cleaning method suitable for the wall and remove the residue. Excessive wetting can damage drywall paper. Allow the surface to dry before assessing blisters and torn areas.

From repair to paint

Repair damage with suitable materials, smooth the surface and remove dust. Adhesive residue and damaged paper may require a different primer from a sound painted wall. Prepare a small trial area. Hiding glue under thick paint or filling a still-wet wall may appear quick but can lead to later failure.

Before coating

  • Confirm the surface is dry, sound and free of dust.
  • Match repair materials and primer to the substrate.
  • Check waiting times for each layer in its own instructions.

What if the wall feels slippery?

That may indicate adhesive residue, although the substrate also needs assessment. Complete cleaning and drying before painting. Test the appropriate preparation and coating system on a suspect area.
