What Is Washable Paint and Where Should It Be Used?

Learn what washable paint means and where this type of coating is most useful in the home.

What Is Washable Paint and Where Should It Be Used?

Washable paint is designed to withstand repeated cleaning better than standard wall paint.

It is particularly useful in kitchens, hallways, children’s rooms and other areas that become dirty easily.

Washable does not mean unlimited scrubbing; follow the product’s washability rating and cleaning guidance.

What washable means

Washability describes performance under specified cleaning conditions. It does not mean resistance to every chemical, stiff brush or continuous water exposure. Compare the intended application and any published wet-scrub performance in the technical information.

Clean correctly

Try a soft damp cloth and an appropriate mild cleaner on a small hidden area first. Hard rubbing can change sheen and leave a visible ring around a mark. Wait for the stated curing period before cleaning new paint. For kitchens and hallways, compare maintenance requirements as well as color and price.

When choosing the product

  • Define the location and cleaning requirements.
  • Read the curing and maintenance instructions.
  • Address moisture, grease and physical impact separately from paint selection.

What if cleaning changes the appearance?

Rubbing may have changed the sheen or damaged the film. Assess the dried area under light. Remove cleaner residue as permitted; a physically damaged coating may require repair rather than more cleaning.
